i must have got lucky... i don't think any of my guitars' pots do that.

i thought that audio taper pots were the only solution

It is all in the 'taper' of the pots... try a CTS TVT pot or a RS Guitarworks Superpot, these pots have a 30% taper and have a much more gradual increase of volume. I have CTS TVT pots for volume and normal CTS post for tone... love it.

On the Stewmac one, wouldn't adding the switch and the long wires change the sound some too?

Interesting clip on adjusting pickup heights. At the end where he says not to use a big solder gun or magnets around pickups, I wonder if an EBow hurts pickups at all over time.
