Just bought this lovely guitar from a good friend of mine, ive never been familiar with the Tokai brand but he assured me it was a great Les Paul as he works on guitars for a living and has compared it to many Gibsons. What can I say, it plays and sounds amazing! beautiful guitar. its a LS130F from 2006, 1959 VOS specs?? he imported it in new from Japan. lemon drop flame top finish with Gotoh PAF pickups and a long neck tenon? is this comparable to the more current and expensive LS models?

Great forum here, pleased to be here!

Congrats, killer guitar.

" is this comparable to the more current and expensive LS models?"

Well, it depends what model it is.
Check a few things.
Does it have brass saddles?
Is the tailpiece aluminium?
Is the body one piece?
Does it have CTS pots?
Is the pickup switch a Switchcraft...it will have 'Switchcraft' engraved in it?
Pull the neck pickup out and take a photo of the cavity.

Whether it's a Premium Series with the specs I list above, or whether it's a Vintage Series is irrelevant, every made in Japan Tokai is a brilliant Les Paul.

Probably its Tokai LS125F/LS135F (LS140F in 2010)
BODY : Flamed Maple+Maple Top
Mahogany Back
NECK : One Piece mahogany
Set-Neck Deep Joint

FRETS : 22F # 213
SCALE : 625/312.5mm
BRIDGE : HLS-VB ( Brass Saddle ) Bridge
HLS-VT Aluminum TailPiece
TUNERS : Gotoh SD90-SL
NUT (width) : Bone(43.0mm)
INLAY : Dish (Amber cell)
PICKUPS : PAF-Vintage MK2?2 (Made In Japan)
CONTROLS : 2V., 2.,
3-way Toggle SW

It was top model from Vintage series. This guitar has most of the attributes of the Premium Series, but come with flame top veneer and lemon drop finish. LS140F now discontinued. Current LS130F was started later and those guitars are not available in Lemon drop.
If your guitar has solid flame top - its probably limited edition guitar like current LS150F AAA.

bump up an old thread....

Its been 3 years with this now its one of my favourite guitars.

I have had it apart numerous times and I can confirm that it has a 2 piece (ridiculously well matched, cant see the join!) mahogany back, thick one piece maple cap (50's deep carve) but with a extremely thin flamed "veneer" top. Deep joint long neck tenon, aluminium tail piece and its got "made in japan" pots with Mk11 PAF pups. (8.2k neck and 11.2k bridge)

Not long after I got the guitar, I had the gotoh tuners replaced for gotoh locking tuners (looks identical) its been rewired 50's style (keeping the original MIJ pots as they are perfect) its had russian Paper in oil 0.022 caps fitted and lastly its been treated to a set of Bare Knuckle Peter Green blues pickups, it has been like this for the last couple of years now. The guitar always gets compliments from all the players that I meet, one guy even went so far as to state online that "Steve's Les Paul sounds more like a Les Paul than a Les Paul!

This guitar will be with me indefinitely, its an absolute keeper!

The MK11 PAFs and gotoh tuners that I took off the love rock I installed into a MIK ES60 that I picked up not long after. My second Tokai, paid 250 quid for it.... thats a fantastic guitar too! I put a new Tone pro bridge and a gotoh aluminium tail piece on to it too, makes such a difference.

Glad you're still loving the guitar.

It was a kind of in between model, not full Premium Series specs but not Vintage Series specs...Tokai don't make this model anymore.

For example, specs it has that a Vintage Series doesn't have, Nitro finish, Brass saddles, Aluminium tailpiece.
Specs it doesn't have that a Premium Series has, one piece body, solid flame maple top.

Happy Christmas!
