I was very tempted to bid on this Tokai Super Edition AST-55H. Ended up selling for $273 plus $40 shipping.

I already have a 1986 AST-40 1960's strat replica which I love, so I couldn't see much risk in bidding on a Tokai Super Edition of the same vintage. Any thoughts on if this was the top of the line super strat of the 80's Tokai era?

Here it is in red in the 1985-86 Tokai Electric Catalog:

I've got a 1985 Super Edition with an 80 sticker. (Presumably AST80).

It's got a coil tap plus built in distortion unit (pull out the back knob).

Wow! That is nice! Never knew they did a built in distortion (unless that was something you added?) Do you know what model Super Edition was the top of the line for the vintage strat body style? I'm kinda thinking about making something along the lines of an Adrian Smith, or maybe Dave Murray type of guitar.

The distortion unit is factory fitted.

As to the rest, sorry, I don't know.

All the best,

I was the lucky winner of that auction. In fact I have been looking for the "specs" on this guitar on a couple other forums since I bought it. I just received this guitar yesterday so I am still checking it out. I want to thank you for the link to the Tokai catalog. It gives a very good description of the guitar. Very helpful It is my first strat so we shall see if it is a good fit.

If it's anything like my Goldstar as far as build quality you got a winner! It would have been a pure impulse buy on my behalf, but I know I would have been satisfied. I stopped bidding at $225.

What is the fretboard radius on it? Is the 22nd fret on an overhang off the end of neck? Really cool Tokai you got, wish i knew more.
