evening all, just wondering why the 3rd (middle) pickup is needed on a strat to cancell the hum of the mains frequency, but you don't need the middle pickup on a tele?
i want to rig up a scratchplate for a strat with just a neck and bridge pickup, will i definately get the unwanted hum?

Hum cancelling occurs when you use two single coils, one with reverse magnetic polarity. The middle pickup on a strat usually has this reverse magnetic polarity, so hum cancelling should only occur in positions 2 and 4. Middle pickup in combination with either the neck or the bridge pickup.

I dont think it would still sound like a Tele, but you could use a reverse polarity neck or bridge pickup and only use the middle position.
 
thanks for your replies guys, just to get this bit right i don't want my strat to sound like a tele :lol:
i still don't get it :oops: , if like you say the hum cancelling only comes into play in positions 2 and 4, when the middle pickup is in parallell with either the bridge or neck pickup on a strat, why do you not get hum in position 2 on a tele when the bridge and neck pickups are in parallel? or are all tele neck pickups reverse wound?

just never realised teles used one reversed wound pickup.

anyone wanna buy a spare single coil strat pup. :(
 
I don't think vintage ones did, but most modern ones probably do. Most pickup winders will give you the option of reverse-wound or non-reverse-wound.

But yeah, basic gist is as long as you have two single coil pickups, if they're wound the opposite way, they'll cancel the hum in the pickup positions where both pickups are on.
 
thanks dave, what do you know about series switching, is it possible using the 5 way switch with a 2 pickup arrangement, i've been scratching my head trying all the permutations, but can't quite get there?

7ender USA made a model like what your describing as far as pickup config! They are called 7ender Lead Series. This is an example of a Lead II. It has a 3 way pickup selector, and a 2 way phase inversion switch. The phase inversion is only active when the 3 way is in the middle position! (Both Single Coils)

sounds preety funky, looks like a dpst switch on-on-on for the pickups, and a dpdt for the phase switch?
looks cool with just two pickups as well.
