I'm not up on Grecos and thinking of getting this for my son who likes customs. What do the Greco experts think?

Good buy?

It's Korean.

If you want a Les Paul Custom and not just a Les Paul that looks like a Custom you have to get a Gibson, a Greco EGC1000, an Orville reissue or other high end Japanese LPC.

Geez Koubayashi he said it was for his son! I assume that means he wants a quality custom, MIJ for a reasonable sum! You recommend him spending a bloody fortune!

Get a reasonable Black custom here are a few MIJ in good condition from a reputable seller I've bought from many times...

Greco or Burny? Choose from these...or others. Plenty of good qualiy Japanese customs to be had at REASONABLE prices.

Dave

There's a lot of quality MIJ Customs to be found, it just depends on what kind of specs you want. And sometimes reputable sellers are wrong; that Burny can't be from the mid 80s based on the diamond inlay.

As Koubayashi pointed out a lot of the 'customs' out there are just standards (i.e. they have a maple cap rather than all mahogany) dressed up as customs, that doesn't mean they aren't really nice guitars.

The late '80's Burny's are very nice IMO and can be picked up relatively cheaply.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think it was Korean but wasn't sure.

A search on the forum found this one, the spec on it looked quite good, and I'd guessed it was the same

http://www.tokaiforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=108580&highlight=greco+1990#108580

That one seems not to be Korean?

But whilst I'm quite knowledgeable on Tokais and OBGs etc I don't know much about Grecos or Burnys.

Based on your advice I'll hold off for a while and look at some of the others.

Hi Dave

If he is okay with a RR type rather than Black Beauty...

I would suggest this one here, which is not much more than the other one.

http://page4.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d107486735

It is the RR65 with Dry 1982 pups...the guitar really has remarkable sounds...
I owned a RR95K with Kahler, the sound was truly wonderful, and I am sure leadguitar323 Mick still has his one

regards, Mick

I am 100% sure it is a Korean LP.
First of all, the yellowed diamond and logo, the lack of serial but also that a guitarshop that has good knowledge in guitars would sell "the real deal" at a higher price. you might think that it has an ebony fretboard but its not. Its some kind of plastic. Looks like ebony from the pics but trust me, Guitarcraft would price this one at a 100k or more if it was a real ebony board.

It is possible but also it might not be...the ONLY way to know for sure is to see the neck cavity IMO as those were also made via Fujigen towards the end. Generally the Fujigen ones had the Mint Collection truss cover but I have seen long tenons on both truss covered models. If you see no tenon, rounded corners on the cavities, and rainbow wiring...do not touch it lol.

Yeah that is worth it for the pups alone however that neck crack would concern me.

Oh DaveWW

If you want that model, watch this one. Comes with a nice travel case which would protect it well during shipping.

After reading this thread I am not sure anymore about which specs certain Greco Custom models have.
I always thought pre mint collection customs had a maple top and mint collection customs all had a mahoganey top and only the 1000 had an ebony board. Am I right?

Thanks guys - I'm glad I didn't go for it as I didn't want one with a dodgy plastic fretboard :-? Never heard of that.

I'll keep my eyes open for something different. The more I look the more I think the new lower end MIJ Tokais are good value for money. But they're slighly out of reach as I'm trying to get one for the same value or slighly less than he'll get from selling his 2002 USA Fender Strat.

Got this one in the end.

1987 EGC58-60?
