Hello,

I bought a Tokai Hardpuncher lately, but i'm having trouble finding it's year of manufacturing. Do you guys have a clue?

- Serial: 105670
- There is a small painted brown line in the length of the neck.

Also: what is the real difference between the basses from, say, '81 and '85? Is older also better in most cases?

Thanks!

I hope it's not painted! It should be a strip of darker wood (walnut?) used to cover the channel gouged into the back of the neck to fit the truss rod - standard practice at Fender on maple necks since 1950.

As for the date, the decal suggests post 1984, but the serial numbers from this time don't indicate date of manufacture. But basses are not really my area, so maybe posting some better pics will encourage more replies?

Is older necessarily better? No. The 80s stuff is pretty consistent, & Tokai still make top quality instruments today - see other threads & you'll see what I mean.
