hi can any body help me ,

i purchased a guitar last week for 80 pounds ,
it was a mess ( refinised body ) but sounded
amazing . When i got home i scrapped the dirt off the saddles and
it has the words FINAL PROSPEC stamped on them, which i know
that early Tokais have.

The headstock logo has been removed and replaced with a cheap looking
Fender Decal so i do not know what model it is .

But it has :

DELUXE stamped on the machineheads

Oldies but Goodies on the headstock , which maybe be a decal

L02122 stamped on the neckplate.

Original Small size fender headstock shape

the Letter U stamped on the back of the pickups which have a grey backing.

No skunk stripe

Neck adjusts at the bottom of the neck

Any help would be appreciated , thanks

Hi shahpur,

from the description i would say it is an ST-50 Goldstar Sound, probably mid-84.
Does the body cavity have a similar code? [ eg 6=11 YSO ] It would be (most likely) in the area under the control knobs.

There is a guy in England selling transfers on eBay for the Tokai models if you want to get it back to scratch

Let me know OK

Yes, description clearly fits Tokai ? and original parts too, inc. pups ? if it?s the thin script style ?7? then it seems to be early type (pre-82). Sounds like you have the basis of a good guitar, and worth way more than 80 quid if it works/plays OK ? can you post some pics?. I think Peter may be referring to a place called ?The Decal Shop? http://www.thedecalshop.co.uk/ :-? .

Thanks for the information and help.

The whole guitar has been resprayed (even the cavities) and then stripped back to the bare wood so I cannot check anything on the body.

It has Oldies but Goodies decal on the headstock but this looks like a transfer ( is that normal ?).

I have posted some pictures at

Yes, it's a decal and it's probably the original one. Now you just have to remove the Fender decal and replace it with a Tokai (normally there is a clearcoat sprayed over the decals). ?80 was really cheap, I paid more for a Tokai strat maple neck with tuners!

Hi guys,
Can you post a clear body shot showing the routing - this would help determine if the body is Tokai, plus the type of body wood (ash or alder)
This guitar won't be pre-82 though as the 'L-series' neck plates started in 1982, prior to then they had a 7 digit number.
All in all, for 80Pd, (AUS$220) it is a fantastic buy plus with Ian's expertise and advise you will have this baby back to its former glory i would imagine

any idea how much it is worth in this condition ?

thanks again for all the help

hi shuhpur

man, that body is pretty messed up. Judging by the body routing, it is genuine Tokai but will need to stripped, cleaned and re-prepared if you are going to restore it. Hopefully the 'brown' is just paint and not a stain. That silver paint is just wrong.

Value ? any-ones guess. In it's present condition - not much over what you paid for it. The resto job will be a little costly but the results will give you a smashing looking guitar and closer to it's real value.

Don't be disheartened - this will be a fabulous project to really connect to your new baby. Let us know what you intend to do, OK

Hey Ian,

ever had that feeling that you just got shafted :x ...This is why I am very guarded about the information I possess.

I have no problem helping players better understand the guitar they own but these 'quick buck' people really get me p***ed off

hey ...if no-body bids on it, it will serve him right.

Ha, ? well it?s a repeat ?offence? ? lots of guys turn up here innocently asking about a guitar, without saying actual intention is to maximize a sale.

Happens on every forum. Nowadays I always assume a post like that is just looking for a free valuation/authentification, ... but I guess there?s no rule against it.

wow. i can't even think of selling the two springy strats that i have now that i've found them. (yes i bought the two guitars i posted about :D )

i'll probably keep the cream one stock and modify the red one a bit to make it my main gigging partner. i'll post more pics soon.

This guy's act reminds me of some of the battered trash you see at guitar shows. "Hmmm ... let's see ... this mold-covered, rusty-crusty Harmony is, eh, 45 years old .. but I'll let you have it for $800 .. it just kills me to give it away for that .. Really? I don't have to sell it you, pal! Go find another one!"

Guess it shows that that the cows are out of the barn as far as the Tokai name goes

I will hang onto mine as well

Plus the sheer gall to tick off our patron saint, Peter Mac - a pox on this guy!!

Ah well, tis the season of goodwill etc.... I?ll try to bear that in mind when my Mother in-law comes over at Christmas  .
