This caught my eye yesterday, but from my searchings I didn't thing 65's were around mid 80's

Not too sure about that JV but the specs are similar or the same as the 80.
Tokai was in financial trouble around this time and may have discounted stock they had to get sales, anything is possible as we all know...

Headstock angle, pickups, FEB (not definitive)?

So you guys think it's an LS-80 with a 65 sticker on it which is due to price cutting when the company was in trouble? Seems a little bit of a strange way to cut prices - offer people what looks like a lower product at that lower product's price!? Why not offer people an LS-80 for a discount?

Seems like some odd stuff was going on in '85?

Yamauchi got a solid flame-top LS-80. Says that Tokai told him they were getting rid of minimal flame boards.

Actually it has to be one of the best looking Tokais I've seen. I don't mind flame if there's just a hint of it:

Impression I got was that it was quite a transitional time for them - with less standardisation than before or now.

Because Tokai prices their guitars by the sticker so if they were selling it for 65,000 yen then it would be a LS-65..
