Hi!!!

It's the first time I write here. I'm very interested in buying a Les Paul Custom 'black beauty' model type. I've been looking for one and I've found two in eBay that looks very interesting, but I don't know hich of them could be a better guitar and why.

These are the guitars:

80's Burny LP (RLC-???):

1988 Orville Les Paul Custom:

or... 1989 Orville:

http://cgi.ebay.es/Gibson-Japan-Orville-1989-Les-Paul-Custom-Openbook-Head-/150483820862?pt=Guitar

The first one looks more used than the second (probably because its age). But maybe its woods could be better. The second has long tennon and weights a little more.

I'd like to ask the experts about these two guitars. I'd like more info about them, which of them could be more accurate to the original Gibson model, and your opinions on which one could be better for buying it (quality of woods, year, pickups...).

Thanks a lot.

That early 80's Burny is probably closer to a 50's model, all mahagony, if that's what you wanted to know but, possibly has an ebonised rosewood board. I'm sure they all have good qualities about them but, I prefer the early 80's Burny, personally. :D

Yeah! I'm totally agree. Burny model seems to be more accurate to the original Gibson... and it looks really beautiful! ;) :D

Does anybody know something about the year, woods of the guitar, the specific model of this Burny, etc..., looking at the photographs?

Thanks in advance.

Ok, and................ another last question. A person has contacted me offering a 1978 Greco Les Paul Custom, which is supossed to be a 1978 Greco.

Looking at the photographs it seems to be really a 1977-1978 Greco by the way the logo is represented and the details (knobs, diamond...). Looking at the Greco catalogs from that era (http://www.grecoed.com/catalogues%20pdf/1978V9.pdf), it seems to correspond a EG1000B.... 8-O .

So................. in this case.... Burny or Greco? And, if it's finally not a EG1000B, looking at the photographs, which model could it be??

Thank you.

You can't say what model it is just from these pictures. It could be anything, a 1000, 800, 600 or 500. A 1000 is the only one with maho top and ebony board. Don't think this is ebony but these are bad pics. Knobs & pointer washers are not original.
A Burny LPC can have either a maho top or a maple top (according to the catalog) so you will not know just by looking at a picture. Early Burnys seem to have better building quality but there's still a lot to be learned from Burny's, so dating is not easy.

correct me if i'm wrong, but as far as I know pre-1980 Grecos usually have maple necks (while a real les paul should have - of course - a mahogany neck). That' why I wouldn't take the Greco, unless you want something closer to a Zakk Wylde model ;)

Maple neck?? I didn't know that. Curious.

Somebody has tested a Burny LP Custom like that mid 80s? How it sounds? It's a good axe for the price? what model could it be? According to the eBay description weights 4.15kg, could it be an all mahogany body?

Thanks!!!!

If I had to guess, maybe a RLC-60. That's a good weight on that one. I have one, 2-piece mahagony body, about 8.5lb. Very resosnant and lite for a Custom. I think the pickups are possibly L8000, instead of VH1's though.

All these posts are really helping me to decide about buying one. And It's clear for me now that I want a BURNY.

Finally, I'm between one of these:

- RLC-65 '57 Model 3PU model (or a RLC-60, if I don't find one).
- John Sykes Model
- Randy Rhoads Model

All of them from early to mid 80s.
Which would be your choice and why?...

Now, I've found a John Sykes model. What about this guitar? It's in MINT condition, and costs 799$:

It looks really amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but I don't know if it would be a good deal for the price, comparing to the others. Somebody has tested one of these? what kind of woods, pick-ups, etc... wears this model?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Thanks.

Why? Because my RLC-65 is my most versatile guitar, and my #1 go-to.

And it's my name-sake

Nice Sykes model. I'd like to have one but, 1 black custom is enough. A friend of mine I trade with, brought one of those over about 10 years ago. Playd great but, I didn't plug it into an amp. I thought it was neat, that they even copied the Dirty Fingers pickup in the bridge!

Just my two cents... I own a Burny and a Gibson Les Paul. The Orville has the most accurate volume and tone knob layout than the Burny. For what it's worth...
