The other forums have not had much interest in my Chandler thread so I thought I might spark some interest here?

Now I know Chandler is still a thriving guitar company based out of California but from what research I have done, they made REALLY nice custom Les Paul copies until Gibson came in and told them to stop and destroy all remaining copies. They then put out an order to destroy all stock but there were a few that managed to be sold and are still circulating to this day. I woke up to bid on another guitar and was about to head back to bed and I saw a Chandler ending and it perked my interest. There were a lot bids on it as well...had what looked to be an ebony fretboard, fret edge binding, a gorgeous solid flame maple figured top, and 2 piece center seamed back. The Harmony Central reviews on them are 10/10 and Chandler answered every single one of their emails about the guitar in a quick fashion along with some history and rarity of the Les Paul copies. I know it isn't MIJ but being that it was bought from Japan and originated in the US, it has a history so I had to pull the trigger on it :D I have emailed Chandler but no reply as of yet.

Some well known artists still play Chandlers:

Tom Petersson
John Entwistle
Joe Bonamassa

Some interesting reviews on HC and they all gave em 10/10! Seems the flame tops were rare and their higher end guitar that was stopped mostly due to Gibson asking them to and the high production costs. This should be a keeper and a good call on an impulse buy :p

I dont' think John Entwistle is still playing them, lol.

I have seen a Chandler strat on the u_box once, never heard anything about them.

Hey udonitron,

that guitar looks amazing. I like the aged plastic-parts and the fretboard with the nicely darkened inlays. Seems to be all naturally aged. Please show some new/better pics when the guitar has arrived.

Greetings,
Ralf

No connection with Chandler guitars in the UK, just outside London, I assume?

Looks nice. 8)

Hey Mike,

Oh could be! I was just going off the Chandler USA site as well as the HC reviews which seemed to match the guitar other than one reviewer saying his was a 96. This one looks older but of course it could have been designed to look that way. I emailed Chandler USA so hopefully they get back to me and once they do I will post more details. I am tempted to buy a hard case to get that shipped in....worried about damage although 11 guitars and counting and no damage yet besides a tiny dent on the back edge of my Fresher.

Haha oh yeah...you will be getting bombarded with Chandler porn sometime next week :D

OK...it finally arrived last week and I have yet to play it until my Gotoh tail and bridge arrive :( . However build quality wise it is just slick as snot! Ebony fretboard, nibs, solid near 1/2" flame maple cap and a 2 piece back and 1 piece neck. The back is stained a different color and almost looks like maple (I was perplexed) but my brother, who was just visiting (has been a fine furniture builder for about 15 years) said he is pretty **** sure it's mahogany but just a different species of it vs. what they used on the neck. He based his thoughts via the fine short grain shots in between the primary veins in the wood itself. The pups may have been changed but not sure...the neck has a brown wire and the bridge is black but the bases look the same. The cavities are well done & routered by hand, not a CNC machine. Caps are nice as too is the wiring. Anyway, without further ado, here are some shots but not taken with my good cam since my card reader died (new one on its way) so these shotty point & shoot shots will suffice for now. Sorry for the blur.

That back looks awfully like Ash to me, i love mahogany and know quite a bit about it and its sub species and that looks like none in have ever seen before. Looks like swamp ash, which isn't necessarily a bad thing..

Mick

Mmmm interesting if they did indeed use swamp ash. Looking up a few shots of it you just might be correct Mick. I will have to give a heads up to my brother lol...

Does Swamp Ash get that iridescent shimmer to it when 1/4 sawn as well? The back has that cool DOF to it, similar to 1/4 sawn mahogany.

OK so I got my weightless aluminum Gotoh tail piece and bridge today. Slapped them on and strung her up with some fine Tone Rocket (I <3 you Geardog!) strings and this guitar resonated like no other I have ever played! Just on its own and not plugged in, the tone and sustain via this wood in just flooring! Similar experience to MIJVintage and his recently acquired History :D

Perhaps it is the possible swamp ash back that is what is making some difference but either way, ****. Time to plug her in and see what she can sing!

i have seen fine lined flame maple tops just like that, (i have a greco EGF-1800 very similar) but i agree it looks very ash-like on the back...nice..i do like ebony boards..

I agree wit Mick; body back looks like ash

from looking at the 5th pic the lumber in the body back looks to be more plain/flat sawn than anything else .........

the annual rings have some fairly wide spacing so, I would guess it's acoustically a pretty lively piece :)

Cool, cheers guys for the additional comments. I didn't realize there were more! :D Yeah it is very resonant and the side profile rings are beautiful...very iridescent
