Hi guys, can you help me with my Tokai tele? it's a pre 1982 model, blonde and has an unusual serial number; V019381, does this make it a 1981 model? what is the significance of the V?

There are some pics on photobucket;

Thanks,
Paul.

You need to unlock your album so we can view the pictures

What are you getting when you try the link? I've unlocked everything I can see on photobucket.

This is the link it tells me to use;

Can you include a photo of the serial number on the neck plate please ?

It looks very similar to my breezysound

Are you sure it's a V on the serial number and not a L ??

Mine has a L serial number to reflect that the breezy is a clone of a 64' tele.

it said to enter password to view album. You have to make them public instead of private. Seems okay now

Is the bridge plate stamped with Tokai (or anything else).

Second Breezy I've seen the last couple weeks that doesn't say Breezysound below the Tokai logo on the headstock.

Yes, the bridge plate is stamped TOKAI. Everything about it seems correct except for an unusual serial number. I've had this guitar for about 10 years and bought it from an ordinary guy who know very little about guitars.

I think it's the same guitar I referred to in this thread:

The serial number looks like the same ones used on the Fender US re-issues. Maybe somebody took the neckplate off a USRI and fitted it to this Tele?

Everything about the guitar looks right for a Tokai - except for the two main identifying features, the decal & the serial number.

Weird. :eek:

same one. i guess the first questions were about whether it was legit based upon the decal

Yes, that is my tele. Has it been a topic of debate? I am deeply honoured.
I did wonder if someone had changed the neck-plate, the neck does not look refinished, or it's a very nice job, but then why stick with the Tokai logo?

Just thinking if the neck had been refinished, check the photos on the link, the stamp on the heel of the neck is still ok so it doesn't seem to have been stripped, can you remove the logo without sanding or stripping it?

I agree, that's why it doesn't make sense. I have a Breezy that was "Fenderised" in Japan - some people do remove the decals & replace them with Fender decals. Is there any sign of shadowing under the decal? One possibility that occurred to me is that maybe somebody removed it, then a later owner reinstated it but used the wrong decal?

But why? :eek:

Or maybe Tokai just used up whatever they had in stock the day they finished the guitar? Fender did that in the 60s after they changed to the transition logo in '64 - spaghetti decals turn up on '65 guitars, apparently.

It is possible, I'm not sure exactly how it gets done though. My TE120 has a Fender decal that looks like it's been there for ever - no sign of the Tokai decal - but the stamped numbers on the neck butt remain (as on yours) to confirm that it's a Tokai.
