RESHAPING HEADSTOCKS

Post by PHANTOMLORD » Thu Aug 21, 2003 3:21 am

I can't help noticing that the new headstock design on single coil Tokai models could easily be reshaped to the standard St**, Te** shape - the longer design rather invites this - Tokai being cheeky perhaps? - matron pass me the hacksaw!

Anyone had a go - what are the best tools etc?

Well, I have a late 80's AST-40 that some previous owner has rounded off. It looks ok, the rounded part is a little smaller than it should be but I actually think it looks better balanced. There's a picture of it here (not so good):

I'm not sure the previous owner cut it quite right - unless AST50's have a wider headstock with more room to round off the end correctly.

For sanding i do recommend a wet and dry material - coarser when dry and then wet it for finer sanding - you can get this at most hardware/artists suppliers. I've sanded my Tele project neck this way and it is even and smooth as a babes arse.

I think as little material as possible has been removed, only the pointy part is gone. The bottom rounded part of the headstock is untouched, I think it's a little bit smaller than on an original shape headstock. Anyway, it looks ok in reality buy I'm not going to reshape the headstock on my new 2002 AST-50. I don't mind the pointy shape and the guitar is great as it is.

I actually like Tokais variant on the classic shape - it one of the few that actually seems in keeping with shape of the body etc

Epiphone 'Strat' anyone?
