OK who here wants to hear a happy and yet depressing tale? Grab your blankets and a hot cocoa and I will take you away to a land of happiness that soon turns to crap! LOL

So I went during my lunch break to pick up my highly awaited and anticipated rare Tokai with what I thought was a Burl top. When I arrived at the post office the lady brings out what I expected to be, as it always has been, a massive 8-10" deep double corrugated box loaded with air bagged padding and the guitar nicely wrapped in bubble wrap etc. Well noooo...she walks out with a 3" deep box JUST barley big enough to fit the guitar in yet alone padding on the top or bottom of the guitar! As she walked ever closer I could see the top of the guitar bulge in the lower center of the box..."I thought WTF, this cannot be good!". I panicked and headed back to work with enough time to scarf my lunch in 8 mins flat!

Heading back to my desk I was at a point where a part of me was so excited to see this guitar in person and a part of me was terrified to open it and find pieces of it all over the place. Well I sat down and opened it up carefully, OK padded air bags on the sides, top and bottom of the guitar (headstock and ***) however no padding other than 2 wraps of bubble wrap around the guitar itself, which was in a thin cloth padded gig bag. There were some large celled air bags around the butt and headstock...looked OK, right...right?

I pulled the guitar out and carefully tore off the bubble wrap and zipped open the bag to find one INSANELY beautiful guitar...the top almost moved as you stared at it via different angles & I was so happy to finally realize what the top really was...dear god Tiger Eye maple!? Whee!:naughty: It literally looked like it was NEVER played, the frets were rough with deposits from salt air but there was NO wear at all on them! No scratches on the top at all...no holes drilled for the pick guard and it just looked new! I was reluctant to turn it over and I did so fearing the worst..."oh wow, a center seamed back!" I thought. "Sweet...mmm...a dent caused from the ****** box it was in as there was a hole in that area of the box...SUCKS but I can deal with it" I mumbled. I creeped up the neck, scared to find something bad and sure enough..."oh man, no way...**** it!" I blurted and caused a few stares. The neck was cracked!!

1st time ever in 14 or so guitars that I have had this happen :( All because of the sub-par ****** box it was packaged in! Now I flexed the neck with a serious amount of force and it just BARELY moves at all...definitely would not have issues while under string tension but how lame is this!? A literally mint, new old stock and super rare never before seen Tiger Maple topped Tokai and the neck gets cracked during shipping!

Below are a ton of nice photos including the crack. If anyone with some Luthier or neck repair knowledge can assist, it would greatly be appreciated! I.E. How bad is the said crack? Should a clamp the base and headstock and flex the neck a bit and add some glue in there and release or? Thanks everyone for the input and enjoy the stunning SOLID Tiger Eye top!

 Wow that is a stunning axe, pitty about the crack  I would have been ropeable if it was mine and it turned up like that  hope you have good luck getting it fixed

P.S. What model and year is it?

It had all the original case candy with it. It is a 1996 LS70. So I assume the equivalent to an LS100 currently? Nitro etc...solid top. Yeah the crack is a real burn! I will have to post pics of the sad excuse for a box they sent it in!

Did you order it from Kisada? I got my '05 LS-150 from them and it was in AWESOME condition, similar to how you described yours. Mine came in case though so I wasn't too concerned with the packing. I did however have a similar experience with my SG I ordered a couple years ago. Real Standard packed it like it was going on a tour of Iraq an it STILL got broken, so I feel your pain. Did you have insurance?

What a shame, beautiful instrument!

dont try and repair it yourself, you will just make a big mess, take it to a good luthier for a small re-glue and touch up and it will be fine..

+1 Someone who knows what they are doing will sort this very easily.

Ouch! It would help us to know who the seller was who packed it like that. One to avoid. As is the practice of shipping a Gibson type guitar without a hard case....

We've seen quite a few of these by now on here (each one an SG or LP just in a cardboard box) , & every one hurts to see. :(

Mike

As long as the box is deep enough so the headstock is surrounded by a lot of padding everything would be OK.

Even a hard case that's too shallow, as a lot of the cheaper ones are, offers little protection. If the end of the headstock is touching the bottom of the case then a drop is likely to cause a break!

That is a nice looking guitar. Shame it has that damage! I had an Edwards flying V come through the mail with a bad bump (but no Break) on the headstock!

All true John, BUT - every single guitar we have seen on here with a damaged neck was an SG or LP sent just in a cardboard box. I don't recall ever seeing details here of a guitar neck damaged whilst in a hard case (though I don't deny that it must have happened).

He Mark..not this pic again  But in this case it was well packed and the post bastards cracked it ! Don't understand why Udonitrons awesome tokai came in such a poor box.
Anyway,it needs a luthiers help, keep your fingers away from it ! You must have good nerves..don't understand how somebody starts to polish the frets instead of bringing it to a specialist first

Olsen...the crack is so minor and hardly moves when flexed. I work late all this week so nothing can be done about the neck until the weekend and cleaning up the frets and board does nothing to the crack in the neck so why not? The guitar is gorgeous and looks to be new, it just needed a bath, a scrub behind the ears, and its fingernails trimmed...some loving  ! It's like buying a gorgeous car that has an engine issue and cannot be driven but the car is filthy inside. What does it hurt to clean it? :-? I spoke with a very well known and respected Luthier on the other forums and he said it is a minor surface crack that just needs to be glued and finished and not to worry about it.

No clue why the box was so pitiful but I have contacted them and I am awaiting a reply. I will post pics of the box when I get home from work...you will all laugh at how sad it is!

Yeah there is insurance and it was not purchased via Kisada! The guitar was originally bought from Kisada and I think the guy just tossed it in his closet as it looks to have never been played or touched! I have to send off a damage letter I had to write and have Canada Post sign and stamp. Then the sender takes that letter and the photos I took and submits it to Japan Post for compensation...2 months later I will see if I get anything back :(

With this information it's ok.Makes me a little wonder that a luthier knows this only from the fotos but I hope with you to come to a good end -the neck on Mark's pic was mine...I know how it feels.I wish you only the minor crack and congrats to your beauty

Well if it was that severe, there is no way I could put a ton of force on it and hardly move the crack. I suspect it is a few mm's deep, any more and the crack would have been up both sides of the neck I suspect. Cheers Olsen!

Sorry to hear about this old boy...

My feeling is that when shipping a LP the string tension should be off and ideally the headstock immobilised with soft padding, and the case should be a proper fit. In rare cases the headstock can actually break even if it isn't touching the inside of the case when the case is dropped, like it gets whiplash or something. Full tension can add to any forward movement of the headstock when the case is subjected to extreme shock (dropped).

S**t UDO! :(
I just noticed and read your post ,you ve been getting some bad luck with guitars this year and its only 5 days old.Jesus i was about to e-mail you as well.

Nothing i can say will help , to see that beautiful tokai in that state it makes me sick, just sending you my best wishes ,hope you will get a good luither to sort it out, does not help the fact that it has happened

You need to name and shame! So it will not happen again to you ,another guitar or forum member.
You seem to be rather calm about it,I would not ,but maybe you have had time to calm down a bit.
