hi guys.

Have any of you guys measured the resistance of your MK3 and MK2 pickups?
I'm measuring the MK2s at 11,5k bridge, and 7,5k neck.

Strange thing is, measuring the neck pickup on an LS85 shows the neck at 10k, and bridge at 11,5k.
Question is, why is the neck pickup on the LS85 so strong, compared to an MK2 neck pickups (7,5K)?
Let's assume this particular LS85 has MK3s in it, still a bit confusing that it should read 10k.

Having said that, it sounds awesome, so if an MK3 neck measures at 10k, then all I can say is it sounds great.

No need to remove pickups to measure them, just attach an Ohm meter to a cable coming out the input jack.

Thanks

Thanks, Phil.

Ok, so we can conclude the MK2s are about 11,5k bridge, and 7,5k neck.

That's amazing output for the MK4s...they must be one of the hottest set of pickups around.

I guess 10k for an MK3 neck sounds about right...but I still need confirmation.

Well Diamond you just got me curious so I measured mine. My '08 LS100Q is neck-7.5 and bridge 11.23... but my '08 LS230 Koa top is neck 7.5 and bridge 8.31. This may explain why it's brighter than the LS100Q. However they are not original, they came from a 2007 SG-155. I have a '94 ObG GT with Classic 57's that measure neck-7.97 and bridge 8.33 fyi. I also have a new pair of 57's laying around that measure neck-7.86 and bridge 7.89. ****, I may have to do some swapping :x .

Oddly enough the ObG '57 pups seem more powerfull, some really wonderfull harmonic feedback! The new '57's came out of the Koa top, and sounded awful in that guitar, way too bright  .

2007 ES130 - Mark IIs, I assume.
n - 7.39k
b - 11.05k

2003 LS70 - Mark 3s, I assume
n - 8.35k
b - 8.34k

Mike

Hey Mike, didn't you say one of your Tokais was Korean made? Is that the LS70 w MKIII's?

No, I did have a Korean LS48, but I sold that to a mate (who loves it), & I put the money towards my LS85S. I don't seem to have noted the pickup resistance from the LS48, & I think my mate has changed the pickups now.

Hey Mick, any idea why the MKII's (I got from Big Willie Style) would measure around 8K for the bridge rather than 11K. Did the 2007 SG 155 have different pups? MKIII's or MKI's?

I measusred the microphones in my Tokais:

These values are measured In guitar
LS150 2009 7.73/8.53
LS85 2003 7.31/10.86
LS85 2004 7.41/11.15

This microphone is disconnected from guitar
LC80S 2004 8.6/8.8

Funny thing I notice here, I have allways thouhgt that LC80S, LS85 and LS150 should have the similar MKII microphones.

Matti

Very interesting Matti, supposedly all MKII's but very different values for the bridge pup. What's up with that?

The LS85S has P90s! When I bought it, I was told that my 2003 LS70/LS60 had Mark 3s. They were quickly replaced with a Pearly Gates set.

How do you find the pearly gates? I have been thinking about getting a set but I don't want to fork out for a set If there's not much benefit over the MKII's.

I really like them, they have just enough top end for me, so they don't sound muddy. About the time I got them, forum member LuBee got a set too, & she likes them. And forum member bluejeannot tried mine, & he likes them - he started to play jazzy stuff when he picked the guitar up!. They sound good clean and overdriven.

I brefly had a Duncan '59 in the neck position, but I much prefer the PG. Funnily enough, PGs tend to hold their secondhand value on eBay, unlike most Duncans. So I bought mine new.

Depends what catalog Tokai are using at the time of order...that's where the confusion comes in.
Catalog #23 - MK3s
Catalog #24 - MK2s.

Very confusing.

Both your LS85s from 2003 and 2004 seem about right on the bridge and neck pups for MK2s, just your 2009 LS150 confuses me...it's way too low for an MK2 bridge.

Interesting, incidentally the LS-150 pickups are close enough to vintage PAF impedances, so that might be the reason - that the 150 spec is intended to be a rival to the Gibson Historic LP?

True, but the 150 is meant to have MK2s, and the MK2 bridge seems to be around 11,5k...not 8,53.
I tested an LS95F, which is meant to have MK2s in it, and the bridge was 11,5k.

I'll test an LS150 tomorrow, maybe that will clear the mystery, or deepen it. :)

Hi Diamond, did you have chance to measure PU's from your LS150 ? Really keen on seeing the results.

Matti
