    Orville Questions - Muddy Sounding

Hi PoorMan! Thanks for that info - really appreciate it. I was hoping there might be some magic method you'd discovered where the finish would almost fall off (without damaging the rest of the guitar) when shown the stripping solution. Sounds like it's going to go on the back burner...

    Orville Questions - Muddy Sounding

Hi PoorMan! I'd be very interested to hear some more about how the finish stripping is going - what you're using and how. I've been thinking about about stripping my Orville LP (and seeing what's underneath the photoflame <g>), but I understand that removing the poly finish is a tricky thing...

MIJ Love Rock (2001) Tailpiece material??

Hi Dominik! I've got a Stewmac/Gotoh Alu nickel TP waiting to be installed. You won't beat it for price, and it looks to be fairly true to the originals (the top profile being quite angled so that it could be used as a non-compensated 1-piece bridge/tailpiece) If you're interested, I weighed...

Has anyone ever refinished their Tokai to be a Gibson?

Thanks anyway, Ochay! I'm thinking about stripping (and having somebody refinish) my Orville LP sometime in the future. I'm pretty sure it's got a poly finish (it certainly doesn't look like the finish on my Vintage RI Strat). Any tips for determining poly v nitro gratefully received. I...

Has anyone ever refinished their Tokai to be a Gibson?

Hi Ochay! >>I have a buddy in Netherlands that did that and he also refinished in Nitrocellulose... You wouldn't happen to know how he removed the original (poly presumably) finish? Thanks, Ian

Hi Albert! Well done. Looking forward to hearing more. Getting the SD 59 pup included was a good deal, I'd have thought. It's a very common upgrade for many LP owners. And getting a hard case sweetens the deal even more. Best wishes, Ian-H

    >> Novovsel said: ...comparison of the two [Tokai & Gibson Hist). I think there would be a lot of interest in that. Oh yes, my friend! Much interest. And if you are to illustrate with piccies, so much the better. Definitely a keeper thread that would be! :) Ian-H

Hi! >> [Ian-S said] the stripy grain pattern typically seen on old violins, I think it was also called ?fiddle-back? I know what you mean. In the Beauty of the Burst book they call it pinstripe. You know, I think I'll adopt your Ian-X nomenclature, Ian. Great idea (even though it brings back...

Hi Albert! Sorry about the delay - I started to reply but the offer of that most rare thing beckoned (a free lunch!). ArthurS has the twin sister to my Tokai - you can see it here in this thread... http://www.tokaiforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=3025&highlight= Yes, it's a veneer top. Ian

Hi Albert! Looks like a Japanese Tokai to me. The truss rod cover is the right shape (I replaced mine with a Gibson one), the serial number looks like mine, the hardware looks like mine as well. Ian

Another possible indicator is that the Korean pick guards are bevelled on the outside edge. I *thought* Violin Finish referred to the colour of the sunburst rather than the wood... Ian

Hi Albert! I make that GBP317. Sounds like a great price to me, all things being equal. Ian

Welcome to the forum Albert! I'm not the forum expert on the various models, but I think I'm right in saying that this one was made in 2003. It'll have a solid maple top with, probably, a 2-piece mahogany body; one piece mahogany neck with the usual added 'wings' on the headstock. Gotoh...

Tokai, Orville, Burny, Greco, Edwards photos

Hi Guys! I'm guessing you're right and it's Swedish or a closely-related language, Luis. Altavista doesn't do Swedish sadly. ian - yes, what a shame there's no English version. I hesitate to say that, but it certainly seems that English has become, on the Internet, a de facto lingua franca, so...

Which pickup rings for my Love Rock?

Hi Arthur; welcome back! I never actually replaced the pots with the CTS ones. I've been umming and ahing as to whether my soldering iron has the oomph (I'm obviously in an onomatopoeic mood!) to solder to the pots. Perhaps I'll just do the 50s mod now. I had been considering getting...

Which pickup rings for my Love Rock?

Many thanks Bill... once I get home I'm unscrewing the control plate to have a look! I could use the CTS pots on my son's Epi Gold Top instead. I remember a photo (that I think was on this forum but I could be wrong) showing a Tokai Love Rock pickup cavity. You could clearly see the central...

Which pickup rings for my Love Rock?

Hi Bill! Great info about the vinegar. I'd tried the tea immersion method before, but without much success; is there an optimum amount of vinegar? Also, very interesting about the Nobels pots. As Arthur knows, I've got an almost-twin of his LP, and I'd bought some CTS pots and Sprauge Orange...
