First off, having seen a bunch of Jazz Sounds, I'm almost certain that it is an authentic Tokai.

Yours predates when they started printing the serials onto the headstock, so I'm guessing late 90's ...

I don't know about 'best' per-se, but Fernandes made a neck-through P that was pretty cool. For what it's worth, I hated my Tokai P-J bass until I took it apart and realized that someone had messed u ...

Hi there, sorry for the late response.

If you look here: http://www.tokairegistry.com/images/catalogs/tokai86_5.jpg

It's the '84 catalog, and shows two fretless 70's, the TJB-70J, and the TJB-70 ...

It's real. Very, very similar to my JB-55 in layout, with the same pickup routing, etc., though with the -exact- same gold-tone hardware as my PJB-55 (I got it wrong last time, mine is a PJB-55, not ...

Yep, it's a strap button. During the early 80's, Tokai was making their Jazz Sounds to be near-exact copies of '64 Fenders. As part of that, a lot of them have strap buttons on the headstock, rather ...

Just a guess, but I'd say it's a TJB-45 from around 87-88. I'm basing that on the headstock, the logo, and the fact that the decal is solid black, not an outline. None of that can really help, excep ...

So, it arrived yesterday evening, and I immediately went to work seeing what all needed to be fixed or was busted.

The Good:

1. The truss rod moves! In fact, it was barely even tightened. It w ...

First, let me second what Sneaky's said already; go on the right day, and the "recycle stores" like Hard-Off and 2nd Street can have incredible deals (still kicking myself for not picking up ...

Oh, and I say "ugly", but hopefully that's only for now; once I get some knobs for it, scrape/acetone off that horrible heart-clover, and buff out the body, it'll be sex-ay!

Also, guessin ...

Hi there!

I took a chance on a Japanese auction site, and plunked down $150 on a well-worn Custom Edition bass.
