Thanks for all your opinions, really appreciated.

The tail piece position will cause the string to reach the adjusted bridge / saddles on an angle - will this effect sound or sustain in any way?

My 1981 ES-100R has a fat neck for sure. In between average 1958 and 1959 burst thickness.
Maybe it's not just the thickness but also the amount of 'shoulder' that's important to you.

for what it's worth, my 1982 tokai es100 is also 42mm at the nut, E to E is 35 mm.

Well, the weight to uphold stays the same, no matter the strap length.

In 36 years, I have owned 16 Les Pauls and worked on many more and find that around the 4.0 kg mark seem to work for most players.
