Re: Book, Tokai The Vintage Years 1977-1986

Hi guys, Good to hear the books finally arrived at their destinations. There were a few hiccups with the postal service to USA and Europe but they were solved. My personal thanks to the 2 members who volunteered their time to forward the books on in order to help me keep pricing down. Hope this help...

Re: '81 Silver Star Saddle Size (and Recommendations)

Hi, It would depend on the sound you are chasing. Choice of saddles is long - solid steel, brass, stamped steel, graphite, roller to name a few. As all Tokai bridges were made by Gotoh, maybe looking into what they offer as saddle replacement could save unneccessary problems. Sizing should be for a ...

Re: Fake or not?

hi guys, I'm going with 'fake'. Apart from the points made by 'el gato' and mdvineng, you can add these.... 1) neck stamp is wrong font. 2) logo is a re-pro - not cut out properly. 3) body markings are not Tokai 4) pickups have no stamps and wrong wires. 5) Slab fingerboard instead of veneer 6) 6-di...

Re: Got a Silver Star : Sometimes the Stars Align

Hi This looks very original except for the electrics. Pickups, pots and selector have been changed, brass grounding plate [P# S-155] is missing. By 1982 - which the serial number indicates - the pickups are grey backed with the letter 'H' on them, not 'U' or 'E'. Wiring is Blue/Black, as per the one...

Re: 79 Reborn

Hi guys, LS-80 came with nickel plated hardware - not chrome. For all hardware, I would use Gotoh as they made the original Tokai hardware and they do sell aged versions of the aluminium tailpiece and ABR-1 bridge. If changing the pots, I would recommend either Gotoh or Alpha (Japanese made). Using ...

Re: Hi folks any help on id for this body please?

hi

The 'dimples' were phased out around 1986.
'Final Prospec' are the correct markings for 1982 - 1986 saddles.
MB is the code for Metallic Blue as previously mentioned.
All things considered, I would put this Tokai body around the 1982-83 mark.

Re: Book, Tokai The Vintage Years 1977-1986

Hi guys, From what I understand the books are held up somewhere in Texas. It is not clear if they are going to be delivered or sent back to Australia - hopefully the former. It would appear my idea of "send a box to USA for re-distribution" is not running as smooth as I had envisioned. As soon as I ...

Re: Identify 79-80 Tokai ST-80

Hi guys,

with the serial number, they were stamped like this until SN 8002200.
It was not till after SN 8003100, that fingerboard impressions and neck plate stamps were used.
This, to me, looks legit - very early 1978 ST80

Re: African Mahogany, Honduras Mahogany or Mahogany

HI GUYS, Keep in mind that Honduran isn't really "Honduran". Yes, it may be grown in Honduras but it is not the Old Growth wood used used by Gibson in the 50s and 60's....and even then it is still American Mahogany [Swietenia macrophylla], hell, Gibson now grow their American Mahogany in Fiji. Afric...

Hi guys, Books have been sent out on August 30, 2019 to Europe and USA for distribution by forum members living there. Each has been packed in a seperate envelope with the name and address sent to me labelled on, plus my return address on the back. All things going smoothly, you should receive them ...

Hi
can you post a pic please.
Stamp format looks like a 1981 setup, but pics would go a long way to determine it.

Hi guys,

i had great success with an LS-65 by putting a Gibson Burstbucker 1 [7.6k]in the neck position and an SD 59B [8.6k] in the bridge.
Pots were wired to 50s spec with Sprague Orange Drop caps.
lots of clarity and grunt when it was needed.

Hi,

You will need to take the neck off and tell us the stamp that is on the base of the neck [eg 6=9A]
The pickups should also have a TEA or TEB stamped in white ink on them.
The serial is later than 1982 though, probably getting close to 1985, but not sure at this stage.
