Hi All,
Just a quick update . . .
As of March 2020, all 100 printed copies of the book "Tokai: The Vintage Years 1977 - 1986" had been sold.
To date there are no plans to run another batch.
I have been approached to do a small book on just the Springy Sound series...
regards

Re: Tokai Breezysound identify
Hi guys,
Could also be under the front pickup in that cavity.
'81 was a bit of a transition year for body stamps - on some late '81 Springy, they have 2 exact stamps, one in the pickup cavity and one in the control cavity.

Re: Springy Sound under the hood Question
Hi guys,
the stamp at the end of the neck in this case is not from the original 1977 - 1982 Springy series.
For original series Springy, the code would read ' 6=10 ' format with no letters and an equals instead of a hyphen between them.

Re: ST-45 or.... ?
Hi guys,
I'm going with TST-40, 1985 with Springy logo. Original owner probably scrapped the Goldstar logo.
The body code is not pre-85, period.
Pickups looked swapped out to me IMO.
Everything else looks pretty nice. Change the pups and play up a storm.

Re: Tokai Talbo Bass!!!
Hi I've been working on some Talbos lately so I may be able to help. Body is solid Aluminium, Neck is Maple 1 piece with rosewood fingerboard. Electronics are solely original for Talbo. The serial indicates it was built in 1984. I believe they only had 1 Bass model in 3 colours and 2 guitar models. ...

Re: New vintage Tokai owner here
Hi guys, Very nice guitar but it has had a neck swap. Serial number is for a rosewood neck - not a maple one. Maple one would be 5 digits for ST-50 and 4 digits for ST-60 Neck and body stamps don't match. Neck has Goldstar logo but serial could be Springy - I'll look further. If this was ST-60 (goin...

Re: Springy Sound under the hood Question
Aha, Brazenpicker, the reason for that is you did not get my book :D Tokai released an ST-70 model in 1981 where BOTH fingerboards were veneer - Rosewood = 1962 slab ; Maple = 1967 veneer. In nearly 35 years, I have only seen 4 real examples of ST-70 R, all were YS finish and serial numbers were in ...

Re: Springy Sound under the hood Question
Nice looking guitar, but it IS NOT a SpringySound made between 1977 and 1982.
Electronics are modern and this kind of stamping never appeared on early Springys.
I would go re-issue also.

Hi guys, Good to hear the books finally arrived at their destinations. There were a few hiccups with the postal service to USA and Europe but they were solved. My personal thanks to the 2 members who volunteered their time to forward the books on in order to help me keep pricing down. Hope this help...

Re: '81 Silver Star Saddle Size (and Recommendations)
Hi, It would depend on the sound you are chasing. Choice of saddles is long - solid steel, brass, stamped steel, graphite, roller to name a few. As all Tokai bridges were made by Gotoh, maybe looking into what they offer as saddle replacement could save unneccessary problems. Sizing should be for a ...

Re: Fake or not?
hi guys, I'm going with 'fake'. Apart from the points made by 'el gato' and mdvineng, you can add these.... 1) neck stamp is wrong font. 2) logo is a re-pro - not cut out properly. 3) body markings are not Tokai 4) pickups have no stamps and wrong wires. 5) Slab fingerboard instead of veneer 6) 6-di...

Re: Got a Silver Star : Sometimes the Stars Align
Hi This looks very original except for the electrics. Pickups, pots and selector have been changed, brass grounding plate [P# S-155] is missing. By 1982 - which the serial number indicates - the pickups are grey backed with the letter 'H' on them, not 'U' or 'E'. Wiring is Blue/Black, as per the one...

Re: 79 Reborn
Hi guys, LS-80 came with nickel plated hardware - not chrome. For all hardware, I would use Gotoh as they made the original Tokai hardware and they do sell aged versions of the aluminium tailpiece and ABR-1 bridge. If changing the pots, I would recommend either Gotoh or Alpha (Japanese made). Using ...
