Fender copies have no dating information in the ser # they followed the fender system by model type. You will also find some more numbers and letters in the pickup cavities, these may help in narrowing it down.
From what I can find 4 digit replicates a 48<57 Fender maple neck.

You are confusing yourself.
Why are you looking at ser # for 82 onwards when you are wanting to buy a 78?
The ser # system changed in 82 to reflect which model and era of Fender they were replicating.

I have to agree. My many years of restoration on a wide variety of things has lead me to believe that factory output wasn't always to catalogue or year specific. Especially around year end or spec changes. Many things I found, could have more than that years spec parts fitted when there was surplus ...

No evidence it is or isn't genuine. Given the un-licensed versions that came out of Korea and now China. Chinese version usually has two letters before the 6<8 digit ser#. 7 is correct for pre 86 but after that who knows. Any pictures?
There are some Fakais with 6 digits but check yours with a torchlight at various angles as this sometimes reveals a feint extra digit.
