Your not wrong oldflame, veneer it most certainly is. I can see the mahogany, two layers of maple or sycamore and the veneer on top. I find it strange that the seller does not give the full serial number when you can make most of it out from the nicely blurred photo, it seems to be 01 for the year.

If A is the tenon and ^^^^^^^^ is the darker wood is the lower area arouted pocket or part of the tenon? It looks to me like the darker wood is a wedge to correct a incorrectly cut tenon perhaps even the Japanese have Friday afternoon syndrome. All the glue in the area suggests a bodge job but...
